Non-Skiers
There's loads to do off the mountain here, whether you're taking one day off from skiing or all seven.
For those who like to soak up a bit of the town's atmosphere, we have a full range of shops, supermarkets, bars, potteries, art galleries and restaurants. Every Thursday morning there is a local market, when the village's main square becomes a hive of activity, filling with stalls selling beautiful local cheeses, meats and artisan produce.
One of the biggest draws of St Gervais is the Mont Blanc Tramway, built in 1907 to climb all the way to the summit of Mont Blanc, this historical ride is one of the last rack and pinion railways left in France.
The quest to reach the summit was halted because of World War 1, and never resumed, so today the TMB reaches the Nid d'Aigle station at the Bionnassay Glacier at an altitude of 2372m, above the Prarion ski area in Winter.
This is the route to ski in Les Houches, newly returned to the Saint Gervais Ski Pass. Click here for the official site.
Saint Gervais is also famously the home of one of the best thermal spa's in France.
'Les Thermes' is located in Saint Gervais Le Fayet (the lower half of the village) and makes use of naturally healing springs from the heart of Mont Blanc to offer both beauty and healing treatments, including the famed 'tired skiers and hikers' session, sure to refresh you and keep those legs going to the end of the week. Chamonix, the birthplace of European mountaineering, is a vibrant town and well worth a day-trip; getting there is easy too, via a scenic 45 minute train journey through all the local hamlets. Chamonix has an endless selection of restaurants and bars to visit, and is of course home to the Aguille de Midi, the mid-station of Mont Blanc itself. At 3842m, this is the highest you can get in Europe without a hell of a lot of work, and the stupendous views extend all the way to the Matterhorn in Zermatt, and beyond.
If you enjoy the train journey, then why not keep going through and past chamonix on the Mont Blanc Express, a train journey so scenic that it has a specially designed train with windows in the roof. There is nothing "Express" about the journey at all, but it is a great experience to wind your way to Switzerland in such a peaceful setting.
The achingly pretty lake town of Annecy is just one hour away, and is a must see for lovers of France. This is about as charming and characterful as it gets. Spend a day soaking up the atmosphere and eating some great food whilst you overlook the vast lake and mountains behind.
More locally, St Gervais has plenty to keep you entertained. Visit the museum and the gallery under the tourist office to learn about the Haute Savoie, or be wowed by the local talent in the Poiterie and art galleries in Town.
St Nicholas de Veroce, a 10th Century parrish that forms a part of our ski area, is home to the Eglise of the same name. Built in the 1720's, it is a magnificent example of Baroque architecture, filled of paintings telling the story of Saint Nicolas (yes that St Nick!). A quiet and peaceful farming village now, there are some great little restaurants that will intersperse a wonder round the sights perfectly.
More active days could include horse riding, ice skating, husky-dog sledding, parapenting, ice climbing, snow-shoeing, and endless amounts of walking.
